About Michael G

Let me tell you straight: I'm 69 years old, and I've been cooking since before some of you were born.

The Navy Years (20 Years)

I spent 20 years as a Navy cook. Started on small ships feeding 125 sailors, moved up to medium ships with 400-450 mouths to feed, then to the big mess decks at Charleston Naval Base where I was cooking for 800-1,000 people at a time. I also ran the galley and barracks at NAS Bermuda.

Cooking for a thousand people teaches you things that no culinary school can. You learn what equipment holds up under pressure. You learn what "good enough" really means when the line is out the door and the captain wants his chow. You learn that fancy doesn't matter — functional matters.

After the Navy

Pizza Hut. Shoney's restaurant. Maintenance supervisor for a mobile home park in West Palm Beach. Then six years as a pub cook, doing about 300 meals a day, every day.

That's the thing about cooking — once it's in your blood, you don't stop. Even when you want to.

Now

These days I cook dinner every night for my wife and our two kids (11 and 14). My adult daughters visit, and suddenly I'm cooking for a crowd again. Seven daughters total — yeah, I know.

I also play guitar, piano, and trumpet. I sing and write songs. I've got a weird talent for spotting hit songs before they blow up. But cooking is what pays the bills — or at least it used to. Now I just do it because someone has to feed these people.

Why Cook's Reality?

I'm sick of cooking. That's the honest truth. But I'm also sick of seeing people waste money on kitchen gear that doesn't work, or reading food blogs that spend three paragraphs describing a sunset before they tell you how to chop an onion.

So here's the deal: I'll tell you what actually works, based on 50 years of real cooking. Not sponsored fluff. Not Instagram aesthetics. Just the truth from a tired cook who knows his stuff.

If I recommend something, it's because I've used it — or something like it — for decades. If I tell you not to buy something, it's because I've watched it fail in a real kitchen.
